Youth Programs
One of the great things about growing up on the South East side of Taylor, TX was the youth programs that were part of the Neighborhood Center, churches, and OL Price school. There were concerts, classes that taught life lessons, and trips to Six Flags and the State Fair. There were the After School Services, Gym Program NYC (Neighbor Youth Program), and the Boy & Girl Scouts. These programs expose kids to a lot of things that they may not normally get a chance to experience.
One of my favorites was the College students who would come during the summer and work with people throughout the community. VISTA is an anti-poverty program created by Lyndon Johnson’s Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 as the domestic version of the Peace Corps.[3] Initially, the program increased employment opportunities for conscientious people who felt they could contribute tangibly to the War on Poverty. Volunteers served in communities throughout the U.S., focusing on enriching educational programs and vocational training for the nation’s underprivileged classes.
