The Chicken Shack

The Chicken Shack, situated at the intersection of Dolan and Walnut (M.L.K.), stood as a prominent juke joint. Boasting a sizable structure, this venue often hosted national acts when they made their way to Austin. It occupied a location nestled between the pavilion in Fannie Robinson Park and the MLK/Walnut area. As a crucial component of the renowned Chitlin' Circuit, it formed part of the network of performance venues spread across the eastern, southern, and upper mid-western regions of the United States. These venues provided a safe and acceptable platform for African American musicians, comedians, and entertainers to showcase their talents during the era of racial segregation (spanning from the early 19th century through the 1960s).

Taylor was fortunate enough to witness the arrival of numerous legendary artists who graced the stage of The Chicken Shack. Performers such as James Brown, B.B. King, Johnnie Taylor, Little Richard, Etta James, Ike and Tina Turner, Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, and Bobby Blue Bland, among many others, made their way through this vibrant town. During that period, artists relied on the support of renowned radio DJs to promote their records. Tony Von, a prominent R&B DJ and promoter in Texas played a pivotal role in bringing a plethora of talented musicians to Taylor.
